Dear publisher,

We believe in the idea of "Focus on the user and all else will follow." Likewise, in order for you to generate traffic and grow your site, it's important to understand your users, their goals, and how they interact with your site. With that our last "Tip of the Month" in 2011 focuses on improving user experience. You can also find updates on:
  • AdSense Success Story:  i-do.com.au
  • Testing your knowledge with the AdSense Academy
  • Improving ad relevance and targeting
  • The top five questions on Ad Traffic Quality

Kind regards,

Understand your users to improve their experience

Users with a positive experience during their visit are more likely to stay longer on your site, return to your site in the future, or recommend your site to others. Your site's content should focus on helping users achieve their goals - while meeting your business goals.

Understanding how users interact with your site will help you identify pages that could be improved. Moreover, it will help you find optimal placements for your ad units. Remember, users come to your site to see your content, so ads which are positioned where they enter your site, engage with content, and leave your site are more visible and thus perform better.

Google Analytics provides webmasters with many tools for measuring website traffic, and gives you insights into your visitors' flow through a site. It allows you to get information on the engagement of users with your content, or the retention rate. With custom reports  you can track and visualise different dimensions and metrics about your audience. Once you know which sections of your site are most popular and which links are most clicked, you can place your ads near those areas. Ads placed near rich content and navigational aids for example usually do well because they naturally get a lot of attention.

Improving ad relevance and targeting

3. The AdSense crawler has no access to your pages.
4. You are using an individual session ID for each user.

Dear publisher,

As the holiday season approaches, advertisers are preparing new campaigns and internet traffic is likely to increase. To help you take advantage of this, in this issue, we've put together the top tips for making your site more visible. You'll also find updates on:
  • Improving page load speed in DFP Small Business
  • Using Google+ Pages for brands and businesses
  • Updating link units for an improved performance
  • Staying policy compliant thanks to AdSense webinars

  Tip of the Month

Make your site more visible!

Be relevant
Do you know how users find your pages? Webmaster Tools provides you with detailed information on the top queries for which your site ranks in Google search results. Use this information to make sure that the content that users find most interesting is most prominent.

  Sign in to Webmaster Tools

Be social
As we mentioned in our last newsletter, by implementing the +1 button on your pages, you can give users an opportunity to share their opinion with you and guide you to what is most interesting for them on your site. Webmaster Tools now also allows you to track the search impact of +1’s on your pages.

Be fast
A faster site increases user satisfaction, so speed is an important factor in the Google search ranking. Page Speed Online analyzes the content of a web page and generates suggestions to make that page faster. Let Maile Ohye from the Developers Program Team tell you more about the importance of your site’s performance:

Google+ Pages for businesses and brands
Google+ Pages are a way for brands and businesses to have a presence on Google+. Pages bring you closer to your audience, letting you have real conversations with the right people, connecting you face to face with your site's visitors, and letting current fans recommend new ones.

Giving your business a home on Google+ lets you directly interact with your users, while giving them more chances to share your content with their friends. Create a page link to come today and connect with your audience!

How to stay policy compliant
We often hear from publishers that they'd like to learn more about AdSense program policies and ask questions directly to our policy specialists. In response, we recently held a number of policy webinars for publishers around the world. To learn more about our webinars, hear a recording, or see our answers to your top questions, read our blog post and  opt in to receive news about upcoming publisher events.

Improved page load speed in DFP Small Business

As a publisher you know how important page load speed is for your pages. If you're looking for an ad serving solution to streamline AdSense and your other ad networks without slowing down your page, you'll be happy to hear that we've just released the Google Publisher Tag (GPT).
The GPT is the next generation of ad tags for DoubleClick for Publishers (DFP), which makes ad serving faster.

Find out more about the benefits of the GPT in the DFP Small Business Help Center

...Did you know?

Link units are a great way to earn additional revenue from smaller spaces on your site, and we've recently revamped them.

For improved performance, we've reduced the number of topics in all link units to four for horizontal orientations and three for vertical orientations. Also, link unit landing pages now have a fresh look: color scheme, orientation, fonts, and number of ads have been updated.

Read more about this update in our blog.

Dear publisher,

In this issue, you'll find information on:

- Attracting premium advertisers to your site
- Mobile ad serving with DFP Small Business
- Google Apps for Business

  Tip of the Month

Attract premium advertisers to your site

Most of our premium advertisers have started to plan for the holiday season and you should too! By opting in to placement targeting, advertisers will be able to target your ad units directly.

In order to ensure your site is getting the highest-paying available ads, we recommend that you also keep these best practices in mind:

1. Implement your ad units above the fold near your content, where users are engaging with your site without scrolling down.

2. Use our top-performing ad formats because most advertisers use them to design their campaigns - medium rectangle (300x250), large rectangle (336x280), leaderboard (728x90) and wide skyscraper (160x600).

3. Opt your ad units into text and image ads so that all relevant, available ad inventory is competing to appear on your site.

Creating placements is easy and a great way to earn extra revenue, but it takes time for them to show up for advertisers, so act soon!

We're soon retiring the old AdSense interface

Hi,

Since releasing the new AdSense interface to all publishers, we've been continuously working to improve and support the new version. With that in mind, we're writing to let you know that we'll soon be retiring the old AdSense interface and asking all publishers to use the new interface.

If you haven't already, we recommend switching to the new interface as soon as possible to familiarize yourself with the updated layout and new features. To do so, sign in and click the 'Try the new AdSense interface' link in the upper corner of your account. We understand that this adjustment may take some time, so you'll still be able to toggle back and forth between the old and new interfaces during the coming weeks. You'll see another notification in your account as we approach the date when this option will no longer be available.

As a reminder, the new AdSense interface offers additional insights in the form of detailed graphs and reports, new ad blocking controls, and increased efficiency through a visual redesign. We've now added many of your top-requested features -- including the ability to create scheduled reports and view channels on the Home tab. We encourage you to watch our video tutorials at http://www.youtube.com/user/InsideAdSense#g/c/B067D355E59D96E0, which will guide you through completing common tasks in your account. You can also find detailed information in our Help Center for the new interface (http://www.google.com/adsense/support/as/).

With this transition, we'll be able to focus on building new and improved features into the new interface more quickly. Thank you for your support, and we appreciate your patience and cooperation.

Sincerely,

The Google AdSense Team

AdSense display ads will now feature the +1 button

Hello,

In the next month, we'll introduce the +1 button and personal recommendations to display ads. The +1 button will begin to appear on AdSense for Content and AdSense for Mobile Content display ad formats -- image, animated gif, and Flash. +1s will be one additional signal to help determine an ad's relevance and we'll continue to show the ads that will generate the most revenue for you.

We previously launched the +1 button on Google search and for publisher sites to make it easier for people to share and discover content across the web. Soon, your users will be able to endorse specific ads and make the ads more likely to appear to their social connections. We believe that these recommendations could help your readers notice ads on your site more, leading to higher returns for you over time.

If you prefer not to show the +1 buttons on display ads on your pages, you can opt out in your account. For more information please visit the Inside AdSense blog.

Sincerely,

The Google AdSense team

Dear Publisher,

In this newsletter we'll be providing you with optimisation tips and some helpful product and policy updates. You'll find information on:

- Optimisation Tip: Make your ad units more visible

- A policy update on iframes
- New platforms performance report
- New multi-dimension reporting

  Optimisation Tip of the Month
Make your ad units more visible
Many of our publishers have been able to generate additional earnings by moving their ad units above the fold. Above the fold placements are considered as those ad units on a site that are immediately visible when the page is loaded (without having to scroll down).

In general, advertisers running high-paid Placement Targeting campaigns are focused on increasing ad visibility and brand awareness. Because of this, they tend to be more selective about where on a website their ads appear.

  Make changes now!
To ensure that your site will profit from these high-paid branding campaigns, we recommend you:
  • Offer wider ad formats in attractive positions above the fold to attract new advertisers who are availing of this new feature.
  • Activate  your ad units for both text and image ads, to ensure you can receive all available ad formats on your pages. Display and video formats are commonly used as part of these high-paid branding campaigns.
  AdSense Updates
New platforms performance report
You can now access a brand new report  in your AdSense account. This report  allows you to see which platforms your visitors are using to access your site and the breakdown of your earnings  according to each platform. You'll see performance data broken out by desktop, high-end mobile devices, and other mobile devices.

Learn how to use this report to optimise your site.

New multi-dimension report
A new powerful feature called multi-dimension reporting is now available in the new interface.  You can now add dimensions to your performance reports to sort and view data across multiple dimensions, including viewing a channel by date or an ad unit by targeting type.

Learn how to interactively explore your data and gain more performance insights.

Regards,
The AdSense Optimisation Team
Policy Updates
Policy update on iframes

Recently we clarified the language in our program policies to prohibit the misuse of iframes to alter the behavior targeting, or appearance of AdSense ads.

We put together this blog post to explain the reasoning behind this policy and examples of inappropriate use of iframes.
